WHAT WE DO

The need

“34% of the total global population are still offline” ITU, 2022

Digital technology is shaping our world of today and of tomorrow at an ever-increasing rate; improving lives for some, but sadly still leaving far too many behind.  Digital education in Africa is in its infancy; due to a lack of computers, the skills to use them and poor infrastructure.  In the UK, digital deprivation continues to divide and exclude groups in society; between those that can use technology effectively and those that can’t.

Our solution

Our vision is for people to gain life enhancing knowledge and skills through accessing and using appropriate digital technology.

Our vision is for people to gain life enhancing knowledge and skills through accessing and using appropriate digital technology.

We are helping to reduce the digital divide, in a responsible, environmentally and socially conscious way.  Our mission is to transform lives through access to and improved use of digital technology.

Our approach is uniquely holistic; we encourage the reuse of computer equipment, which we refurbish for our programmes in Africa and the UK, whilst supporting our local communities – working with prisons, the unemployed and schools – as well as the global community, to improve skills and confidence in technology.

Our goals

Relevant agencies and government departments increasingly promote and support digital technology for education.

Like minded organisations collaborate effectively to support greater digital competence among students and communities.

More schools, community and other groups are able to offer quality digital education resources.

Schools and communities have working computers and laptops available for use by communities.

More teachers, students and local community members gain useful digital skills.

Teachers are well trained in digital technology and motivated to teach others; they are upskilled to skill the learners.

More disadvantaged and excluded people use digital technology to enhance their lives.

More schools and people can better their education or support their families.  People gain digital skills and can manage their lives more effectively.

Recycling computers

We recycle computers, refurbishing them to extend their lives so they can be reused, giving access to digital technology to thousands more people in Africa and the UK.  Our computer supply programme supports our goal that, more schools, community and other groups are able to offer quality digital education resources.

We aim to send all appropriate, working equipment to Africa, but sometimes we receive items not suitable, due to damage or are equipment that is too specialist, so these are resold or recycled in the UK and the proceeds put back into the charity.

Sustainability

As a charity that puts recycling and re-use at the heart of what it does, our environmental impact is important to us.  We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and we want to report on our activities where we work in Africa and the UK as we work towards becoming carbon neutral.
