IT Schools Africa is now The ITSA Digital Trust

Sad News

Dear Friends,

It is with heavy hearts that we have to report that Monis Khalifa, one of the two co-founders of our charity, passed away on 21st December 2024.

Monis had worked at ITSA for most of the charity’s 20 years, until illness prevented him from working in 2024.

Following Muslim tradition, Monis was buried on Monday 23rd December, surrounded by close friends. We are planning a Celebration of Monis’s life and work for family and friends, which will take place later this month.

As some of you have already commented, Monis was a friend to all.  He was dedicated, inspirational, warm and humorous.  He helped to bring positive change to many people’s lives.

10 years ago, when our charity was 10 years old, Monis was asked what his greatest memories had been of the charity.  He commented:

“I have so many wonderful memories. I remember an elderly couple who had gone to so much trouble to clean and repack their old computer and had made the effort to find us in Cheltenham, all because they wanted to give something to others.”

“Something I have seen many times at ITSA is a shy volunteer arriving on their first day, confused, and probably asking themselves “What am I doing here?” But by Day Three they’ve gained new skills, made new friends, built up their confidence and are enjoying the satisfaction of giving their time to help African students.”

“And finally, the wonderful smile on a child’s face as they see a computer for the first time. Knowing that child has a chance to build a brighter future, that is what it’s all about.”

Monis’s contribution to the charity and to so many people’s lives in
Africa and the United Kingdom is unparalleled.

We will all greatly miss him.
